Transdiagnostic Care: A new approach that's transforming therapy & driving lasting impact

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Diagnosing mental health conditions is a critical part of care, but it’s also incredibly complex. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) – the long standing reference guide that therapists & psychiatrists rely on – lists over 250 mental health conditions. And within just one diagnosis, like depression or PTSD, there are thousands of possible symptom profiles.

Each diagnosis comes with its own evidence-based treatment protocol to address the symptoms of each diagnosis one-by-one, however, this can often lead to fragmented and lengthy care. I’ve been a clinician for over 20 years, and I’ve seen firsthand how these complexities impact providers' ability to care for members, and how draining it can be for members.

In traditional mental health care, it's common for members to present with multiple diagnoses, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, each with its own evidence-based treatment protocol. This places a significant burden on providers to blend approaches in a way that is both clinically sound and engaging for the member. Without clear guidance, this complexity can lead to fragmented care plans, overlapping goals, and extended timelines to see progress. This complexity often leads to disengagement from care, resulting in poorer outcomes for individuals and higher costs for employers.

When I speak to organizations about their mental health care needs, one of their top concerns is the effectiveness of care. Even with more accessible ways to find a provider and begin care fast, HR teams want to know their employees are getting the proper and best treatment so they can feel better and more productive in their lives and at work.

As Chief Clinical Officer at Headspace, my job is to make sure our clinicians have the most effective, efficient tools to support both themselves and our members. That’s why we’ve embraced transdiagnostic care—a modern approach backed by growing clinical evidence and proven to address the complexities of real-world mental health needs.

What is Transdiagnostic Care?

Transdiagnostic care targets the shared root causes across multiple mental health conditions.

Instead of treating surface-level symptoms one diagnosis at a time, our clinicians focus on the underlying patterns that drive multiple mental health conditions.

This lets clinicians:

  • Use a single protocol to address multiple conditions
  • Deliver treatment outcomes in as few as 6 to 8 sessions
  • Help members recover more efficiently—and stay well longer

This model isn’t just clinically effective—it’s also more efficient, driving lower utilization of high-cost services and preventing unnecessary escalation to inpatient or crisis care.

How Transdiagnostic Care Works with Headspace

At Headspace, we deliver care through the Unified Protocol, a research-backed, transdiagnostic framework that helps members build emotional awareness, reduce avoidance, and develop lasting skills for resilience, all through a consistent, scalable framework for clinicians.

Let me show you how I have applied the Unified Protocol in my clinical work:

I met with a member who was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and PTSD. Instead of referring them out to three different specialists or protocols, I used the Unified Protocol to target the shared emotional challenges beneath the surface. Within a few weeks, the member reported improved mood, better relationships, and more confidence in daily life—all without prolonged or overly complex treatment.

By using one consistent, evidence-based protocol across a range of emotional conditions, we simplify care for both members and clinicians—reducing the risk of over-treatment, care fragmentation, and clinician burnout.

The Result: Better Outcomes, Lower Costs

For your organization and your people, this translates into:

  • Faster access to the right level of care, reducing absenteeism and supporting productivity
  • Fewer referrals to high-cost services like ER visits or specialist care
  • Lower total cost of care through early intervention and prevention
  • Improved employee experience and retention, with 4.9/5 average clinician satisfaction ratings from Headspace members

Designed for Scale, Rooted in Providing Best-in-Class Care

Our care model is built to scale—without sacrificing personalization. We pair transdiagnostic clinical care with culturally responsive, member-centered therapy that builds trust and engagement.

It’s why employees actually use and value our services—and why you’ll see the difference in your data.
